Crossreference displays complete topic, not just heading

Post by qtxasjo »

I hope someone can help me with this issue fairly quickly, I have already spent way too much time trying to solve it.

I'm creating a cross-reference from one topic to another topic. I have done this hundreds of times and I use the same procedure, the same format, the same project, the same style sheet etc. and everything looks good in Flare and in the preview. Unfortunately, in the generated PDF the link does not show only the heading of the linked topic but the complete heading and text.

I have created a link exactly the same way to another topic and that displays just fine. I have removed the link and created it again, I have removed the heading in the linked topic and inserted it again, I have checked the code and I can't spot any differences between this link and other links or between other headings I link to and this heading. I have also deleted the Analyzer folder, restarted my computer and cursed a lot, nothing helps - the link still displays the complete topic instead of just the heading.

Any tips?

I have now created two new topics from scratch, copied the text from the two old topics I'm trying to create a link between and pasted it into Notepad. From Notepad I have copied the unformatted text and pasted it into the two new topics. I have deleted the two old topics, reformatted the two new ones and recreated all links. To no avail, all links in the entire document works perfectly fine except for the link between these two topics.

Sounds like a question for Tech Support, unless one of the wise ones comes along with a solution.

The only thing I can think of is if the closing heading tag isn't after the heading text but is further down in the topic (in the destination topic). However, I would expect opening that destination topic to give you an error that the code isn't formatted correctly. Unless heading tags are considered container tags, but I didn't think so.

So maybe check the destination topic for the problem, not the xref in the source topic.

Solved! Tech support was (as almost always!) able to help me - it was an error in my stylesheet.

I have the "Use TOC depth for heading levels" enabled and the behaviour was caused by the location of the topic within the TOC. The location made the heading level of the linked topic a level 4 and in my stylesheet the h4 'mc-heading-level' was set to 0. This caused the heading to become a paragraph (even though it looked like a heading), which was the reason the entire content of the topic was displayed in the PDF. As soon as I changed the mc-heading-level from 0 to 4 everything worked just fine. :)
