Footnote text color

Post by sdcinvan »

Hello everyone,

I have a footnote dilemma and I cannot find a way to fix this issue.

I have inserted a footnote next to text in a table column title but the foot note cannot be seen because the cell color is the same color as the footnote value (black). However, if I change the footnote value to white, this color change is tied into the footnote text description and superscript number, at the bottom of the page, which has a white background.

In other words, I can either see the footnote number in the column title OR I can see the footnote text, at the bottom of the page but not both.

Does Flare allow the footnote number color and the bottom page/footnote number with accompanying footnote text to each have different colors?

Thank you

Hi Shawn, this might not be an elegant solution, but: Could you set the background of the footnote style to same colour as your page colour? Then your footnote number in the table would be visible, albeit not very attractively, and your footnote text at the bottom of the page would appear "normal"...? I haven't used footnotes in Flare yet, maybe you can tell.

I think I found it:

http://webhelp.madcapsoftware.com/flare ... mbers.htm?

Basically: create 2 span classes, one that specifies the colour of the number in the text (table) and one for the colour of the number in the footnote block.

Ensure that the footnote style that you are using has a font colour set, presumably black.

Select the footnote and open the properties dialog. On the first tab, there are 2 fields at the bottom for specifying classes for the in-text/table number and one for the footnote number below.

A bit fiddly, but seems to work.

Hello Tom, thank you.

Brilliant and not really that 'fiddly'. :D

Or, you should be able to use a complex selector. So your base footnote style has the color as black, but when it's inside a table header cell (<th> tag usually) then have its color be white. That way you don't have to worry about manually applying the span tag around the footnote -- the CSS will automatically change its color if the footnote is inside a <th> tag.

Glad we solved it, Shawn!

Thanks Lisa, I think I'll have a go at that. Complex selectors have been on my "wait, what?" list for a while.

Complex selectors are on my "couldn't live without 'em" list - I'm sure you'll absolutely love them when you get your head round them. Makes your stylesheet so much easier to manage. See http://www.w3schools.com/cssref/css_selectors.asp to help you get your head round the concept.

Thank you Lisa!

I am in that "complex selectors - I must look into that" boat too! Once this release cycle is complete, I will definitely learn more about this.
