Remove Index Keywords

Post by Cal Wilson »

Flare 9.1.2

I am using the Index Window to create keywords (top level, sub, etc.) and associate topics with the words.

I understand how to add an index term to a topic using the window terms window. I see the term added to the target topics. I see the term in the explorer window.

In explorer, how can I distinguish between index terms and keywords that were added directly in explorer (right-click, click Add Top-Level Keyword.

In explorer, I click the icon that shows the tip Expand keyword entries. However, the keyword entries are not expanded.

I want to be able to identify all index terms easily so that I can identify the ones that I want to remove. I would like to do this without having to open an view all topics.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Not entirely sure I'm following, but just to clarify... When you right-click and select Add Top-Level Keyword, you're just creating a keyword, not creating it and associating it with a topic. You can't expand the keyword until you actually add it to a topic, which you can do by dragging the keyword from the Index Window into the topic's contents, then saving the topic. When you drag and save, then the arrow icon will appear next to the keyword and you can expand it to view the topics that keyword is used in.

If you have a keyword that you've created but you've never applied to a topic, then you can right-click on the keyword and select Remove Keyword. Even if you've associated one or more topics with the keyword, you can right-click and select Remove Keyword, except this time it will tell you it's modifying one or more files and you'll then have to save those modified files to successfully remove the keyword from the project.

Thank you for taking the time to help.

Here are the steps that I am following.

Open a topic.
Place the insertion point in the topic.
Open View, Index Window.
In Index, Terms pane, under Terms, type a term and press Enter.
The term is added to the topic at the insertion point.
The term is added to the Explorer pane of the (lower portion of the) Index window as a Top Level Keyword.
The open topic is added to the term (which now is and looks like a top-level keyword) as a link.

Add other Top Level Keywords and create links using the following steps.

Open View, Index Window.
In the Explorer pane, bottom of the index window, right-click and click Add Top-Level Keyword.
Assign a topic to the new top-level keyword.

The added term and the added top-level keyword look exactly the same in the explorer.

I want to be able to identify the term or terms added using the first steps only so that I can delete them from the explorer, that is, delete them from the project.

Since the added terms and added top-level keywords look the same, there is no way to identify only the terms.

I have attached a picture to show the results of the steps above.

I am looking for a method to open the Index window and find terms like AAtermAdded without having to open the topics to see if the keyword is a term that has been placed in the topic at the insertion point.

I want all keyword tags to be at the top of the topics. I can accomplish this by adding the top-level keyword to the explorer first and then assigning topics to the top-level keyword (AATopLevelKeywordAdded).

If terms are used, the tag could be anywhere in the topic based on where the insertion point was when the term was inserted. If I can identify the terms in the explorer list I only have to remove them from the list to remove them from the topics without opening the topics to see the location of the tag.

No, there's no way looking at the term to determine where it's located within the topic. You'd have to manually open each topic and see where the keywords fall and either delete them or move them to the top of the topic, if that's where you want them.
