Why is Make Paragraph Items feature grayed out?

My team recently acquired some writers who are not code savvy, so I've been trying to find a way for them to add paragraph items within a list item (e.g. graphics and notes) without manually adding them in the code. I finally stumbled across the *awesome* Make Paragraph Items feature in the List Actions menu, but it's grayed out

I've tried multiple topics and tag types, but I still can't get it to show up. Any reason why it wouldn't?

I am almost ashamed to admit I had no idea that feature existed; I always just go to the text editor and change the code.

When I play with it, I found that it worked for me regardless of whether I simply placed the cursor in the list item text, or highlighted all or part of it. The only time it grayed out for me was when I had the cursor outside of the list. It even worked when I highlighted my entire list at once. I wonder if there is another style at work in your list that is preventing the behavior?

What happens when you put your cursor inside a list item and you use the keyboard shortcut CTRL + ;

ToddPh, I had no idea it existed either, since I prefer to go into the code, too! I believe it is a style that is somehow overwriting my options here. The trick is to figure out which one. If I change to a different style sheet, I am able to use the Make Paragraph Items feature.

doc_guy, when I press CTRL +, nothing happens. Thanks for the idea though!

As a work around, I created an li.paragraphnext style and added this mc-next-tag: p. It seems to work for now, but it would be nice to figure out what's going on in my styles that is disabling that feature.

Heather, it's a semicolon not a comma.

BTW, check out the post I added yesterday in the Tips and Tricks forum about my offer to send anyone interested a brochure of Flare 10 keyboard shortcuts that I gave out in one of my MadWorld 2014 sessions. In fact, this thread was one of those that inspired me to offer the brochures to the community.

Me too. Now I've found it - it took some looking for.

But it is greyed out for me too, although I didn't try it from inside a list, so I'm not completely surprised as it is inside an option called "List Actions". I'd find it useful for the odd occasion I unbind my body text from the <p> tag, even outside a list.

For those of you who can't access it, can you access the other items from the List Items drop-down, or are they all greyed out?

Huh? Where else would you try it but inside a list? (I'm not picking on you, Marjorie. I'm just mystified...)

Try this. Start a new list. Doesn't matter what kind. You should now have a list block with a list item inside. Put the cursor at the end of the list item, or anywhere in the list item for that matter, and now press Ctrl+; OR you can right-click the li structure bar and select Make Paragraph Item.

I've yet to duplicate the situation when the Make Paragraph Items is grayed/greyed ( ) out.

Outside a list, of course.

I occasionally manage to delete the <p> tag completely from some text, so it is just at body level. A bit of over-enthusiastic unbinding will do that.

So I wondered whether this function would save me having to hack the XML to add the paragraph tag back. It doesn't. Then I wondered whether the reason that the original poster couldn't get it to work was because they were trying to do the same as me.

It would be a useful feature, inside or outside a list. Inside tables too.

Can you paste the source code for a list that doesn't work? I'd like to see if you have some class referenced or something. Then I'll probably ask to see the related styles from the style sheet (source code, not editor) if you know which ones those are.

Shot in the dark - but are any of the styles in your style sheet set to "disabled"? Disabling certain styles can prevent the associated options from being enabled in the Flare UI.
