Bizarre issue with the first letter of H1s

Post by Jess77 »

I am having the oddest problem. The first letter of each Heading 1:
  • appears larger than the rest of the letters; almost as if I selected smallcaps (which I did not)
  • has a line above and below it
  • cannot be deleted in the XML Editor (I can delete it in the Text Editor)
  • when selected in the XML Editor selects all the text in the topic

This just started happening the other day. I don't see anything odd in the code. Any ideas?

So far it's not affecting the output; the H1s look totally normal in the output. I'm fine with leaving it this way; I just want to make sure that this is not an indication of some deeper problem in my project that could make the compiler blow up at some point.

Thanks!

Follow-Up: I just noticed that the first letter in the breadcrumb proxy above the H1 is missing. It says "ou are here."

I have checked the stylesheet and the "Y" is there. I have also checked the master page and the proxy appears about a millimeter above the HTML block, but the code looks fine. Could these two be related?

If you cannot delete it, this sounds like some autogenerated stuff. Do you use autonumbers or such?

I don't use auto-generated anything in the H1 style. Could it be coming from the TOC?

I have narrowed this down to a corrupted TOC. Does anyone have any troubleshooting suggestions?

Corrupted TOC in Flare? Can you just rebuild it?

So, if you remove the TOC from your project (move it to somewhere else or make a backup), your topics look fine again?
It sounds so strange the TOC has this kind of effect on topics.
What happens if you create a fresh outline TOC and make it the primary one?

1. I would love to know how to rebuild a TOC. This is the first time I have ever heard this phrase. How would you do it?

2. It turned out not to be the TOC but the stylesheet. I reached out to MadCap Support and it turned out to be code that I don't ever remember putting in my stylesheet. Code that added a border around the first letter and that border blocked out the "Y" in the "You are here" breadcrumb prefix.

Thanks for all your help!

Edit: For those of you "in the know," this is called a clipping issue.
