Non-trivial relationship tables

Post by mpaquette »

Hi,

What's a good way to organize relationship tables?

I use Flare 8. I have a project with a single relationship table that contains almost 200 rows. The table has just 2-columns for source-to-target relationships.

Relationship tables seem to be my best choice:
  • They work with PDF and HTML5 outputs.
  • They keep cross-references out of my topic source files.
  • They provide a single place to manage inter-topic links.
But the editor lacks important capabilities:
  • The Find and Replace dialog doesn't search through relationship tables.
  • Only the Row Name column is sortable.
  • The cells show topic file names, not topic titles.
  • The UI for inserting rows, columns, and links is awkward.
Am I missing something? Are there any improvements to the editor in Flare 10? Should I break down my table into several smaller tables, organized by subject matter or topic type (concept, task, reference)? Should I be using some other linking feature in Flare? How do you manage the many inter-topic links in your projects?

Marc.

You are not missing anything - the Relationship Table Editor really is that poor. I've submitted feature requests to address the issues you mention, and urge you to do the same.
