square-root symbol does not show up in PDF

Post by pdenchfield »

The square-root symbol I inserted using Equation Editor appears fine in the XML Editor of Flare, but it does not show up in the PDF output.

Equation as shown in Equation Editor:

Code: Select all

<math>
   <mrow>
      <msqrt>
        <mrow>
           <mi>P</mi>
        </mrow>
      </msqrt>
   </mrow>
</math>
XML in topic:

Code: Select all

        <table class="TableStyle-Standard" style="mc-table-style: url('../Resources_aa_Shared_ENG/TableStyles/Standard.css');margin-left: 0;margin-right: auto;caption-side: top;mc-caption-repeat: true;mc-caption-continuation: ' (continued)';" cellspacing="0">

Just submitted a bug for this: case 63461. Thanks for any insight you can provide!

Re: square-root symbol does not show up in PDF

Post by pdenchfield »

Seeking ideas. MadCap Tech support cannot reproduce the issue from my project.

We thought maybe it was my lack of a Ghostscript installation, but the issue was still present in my PDF output after I installed Ghostscript and restarted my machine.

The disappearing square-root symbol issue occurs only in heading rows that are defined as white text. In other heading rows, non-heading rows, or paragraphs, the symbol appears as expected.

Would love any suggestions!

What happens if you zoom in on the PDF? Does the symbol appear then?

Thanks for the idea. Unfortunately, 1200% zoom fails to show the symbol.

What are you using to open the pdf? Reader or Acrobat? Does changing to the other make any difference? Do you have the latest versions (Adobe seems to have more updates than Windows)?

Have you removed everything from your output cache(s) before creating a new build? (Clean Project on the Project tab)

What happens if you view the PDF on another machine? Do you have Flare on another machine you can use to see if the problem recurs?

It seems odd support cannot reproduce the problem, that sounds as if they have built from your project without an issue. Hope one of these suggestions sheds a bit of light on what's happening...

Thanks, Steve! I am not able to install Adobe Reader for some reason to do with my Adobe Creative Cloud membership. The PDF generated by Tech Support shows the symbol when viewed on my computer. The PDF generated by me does not show the symbol when viewed on my computer or theirs.

Further troubleshooting shows that the issue is likely color-related. The symbol shows up in black or yellow font, but not white.

Tech support suggested I try #f7f7f7 instead of pure white, and it works! The symbol shows up. Not sure what the deal is with pure white, but I'll go ahead and update my table styles to use #f7f7f7.
