Variables not working in index links

In some index entries, I use variables that resolve correctly in WebHelp (for example, [%=GlobalVariables.ProductName%]:about). However, when I use a variable in an index link, the entry either doesn't show up in the index (for example, [%=GlobalVariables.ProductNameExpanded%] linked to [%=GlobalVariables.ProductName%]) or shows up unresolved (for example, [%=GlobalVariables.ProductName%] Management Console linked to Management Console).

Is there a trick to making variables within links resolve correctly and appear in the index?

Can anyone help with this?
