Topics & Heading Level

Post by oceanclub »

I'm only really starting with Madcap Flare so bear me as I ask what may be stupid questions:

When I create a topic, I have to give its title a particular heading level (H1, H2, etc). However, given topics are reusable, I may use it in a document at any particular level. What happens then?

Hi! To cover this scenario, our projects are configured so that each modular topic uses an H1 heading, allowing us to mix-and-match topics for reuse without worrying about the heading level. Within the stylesheet, we still define the properties for the H2 - H6 headings for all mediums. For PDF outputs, we enable the "Use TOC depth for heading levels" checkbox on the Advanced tab in the target file. This allows the outline TOC structure to automatically determine and apply the appropriate heading in the generated PDF. You can find more information here: http://webhelp.madcapsoftware.com/flare ... nt_TOC.htm

Without seeing what you are doing its hard to give a specific answer, sort of like 'how long is a piece of string?'

If it doesn't happen that often you might want to use conditional tags. For example, if this is document A use this heading, if it is document B use that heading.

If it happens often you could create topics containing headings only, and topics containing content only. You could then use a separate TOC to build each document, adding the heading topic then the content topic to make sure you are using the right heading level for that particular document.

Aha, that explains it for me - thanks to everyone for answers,
