Include different index link sets in different documents

Post by lisadames »

I have index links that I want to appear in some outputs but not others. It seems I can create multiple index link sets, but I cannot figure how to include them in different outputs. Does anyone know whether it is possible to do this, and if so, how to do it?

I couldn't find a target setting to control which index link sets to use. But you could resort to conditions (in theory; I haven't tested this). You'd need to create a condition for each target, apply the appropriate condition to each index link set, and then set all the targets to include its own index link set but exclude all others.

I already have a condition for each of my targets, but I don't see a way to apply a condition to an index link set.

In the Project Organizer > Advanced folder (where I assume you have the index link set files), right-click one of those files and select Properties to open that file's properties. Then, on the Conditional Text tab, set the desired condition on the file.

I created a separate index link file and set the conditions on it for the documents in which I want the links to appear and not for the document in which I don't want them to appear. My target was already configured to include the condition I want to appear in it and exclude the other conditions. I'm still getting the links I don't want in the document in which I don't want them. (The conditions on the target result in the correct text being included/excluded from the topics in the document, so I'm sure I've got that right.)

Ok, I've been away from Flare for quite awhile, but as I recall, index terms are stored in the topics, so if your topic is included in the output and you didn't condition out the term itself, then it will be included. I can't remember if I've ever tried to condition an index term in a topic, but I've conditioned hrefs and span tags and such, so it should theoretically be possible. (And sorry, don't have Flare running at the moment to test.)

I don't know what would happen if you used the option to auto-generate the index terms. I don't think you have conditional control over what it generates, other than whether or not the topic containing the index term is itself conditioned out. If the topic is out, the index term is out (at least its instance in that topic). So if you need to fine-tune which index terms are included, then you probably can't use the auto-index option.

Again, I've been away from Flare for several months, so apologies in advance if I steer you wrong.

The index entries targeted by the links I don't want are in topics that are not included in the target TOC. In the generated output, the links appear as See references to the nonexistent index entries, and clicking on the references doesn't do anything because the topics with the entries are not in the target output.

I would consider that a bug then. You can submit bug reports at http://www.madcapsoftware.com/bugs/submit.aspx.
