Some screen grabs appear blurry

Post by ccardimon »

Any ideas on why some screen captures seem just a tad blurry and some are fine?

Will I get marched off the premises if I suggest you hold your camera still?

Seriously though, what format are you saving your images as, and what resolution are you taking them at? I find that some formats blur very easily (can't remember which, sorry!) but I've found png works well for my html help and PDF outputs.

The screen caps look good in Flare, and they look good in WebHelp on my own screen. Caps don't always look good on other's screens.

I used PNG.

How can I tell what the resolution is?

I just let Snagit handle things on that score.

Not certain what I should do here.

Snagit captures at default resolution, 96 dpi. This can be changed in the capture tool by clicking the Effects -> Image Resolution options towards the bottom of the window.

In snagit editor you can view, and change, the image resolution by clicking Image -> Filters -> Resolution (dpi).

I've noticed some effects, such as curled edge, reset image resolution to 72 dpi.

Quite often blurriness is caused by resizing an image. We capture screenshots at 96 dpi, and use that in online and print to good effect. I try not to resize, but if the image is going to be resized it is better to do it in an image program (such as snagit editor) and resample the image. You can then use a sharpen filter to try and improve quality. This is better than resizing an image in a presentation package, which doesn't usually resample the image. I usually crop images (or resize) to 550px, matches our print requirements (Word) because the image will insert at 100% and not get resized by Word.

I also use png (in WebHelp as well as PDF and Word) and never have problems, but when resizing I always set one of the sides to Automatic!
In 99% of all grabs I use Capture.
