How do I link from inside one topic to a bookmark in another

Post by jbananak »

I know how to link with hyperlinks and cross-references (I don't exactly understand the difference between them, but that's another issue).

I don't know how to link from a link in one topic to a bookmark inside another topic.
Anyone?
Thank you.

I'm going on memory as I don't have access to Flare at the moment, but here goes...

On the Insert Hyperlink or Insert Cross-Reference window, find and select the topic you want to link to. Then, look about halfway down the window to find a little button at the left that looks like a bookmark, with a text box to its right. Click that little button, which will open another window in which will be listed any bookmarks that are in the topic you selected. Select the bookmark and go... Hope that's enough to get you going.

Now, the diff between a hyperlink and a cross-reference. There are many, but here are the highlights:

-- For a hyperlink, you not only select a topic to link to but you also define what the text of the hyperlink will be. Say you want to insert a hyperlink to a topic called "Cats and Dogs" and you want to insert the link in the middle of a sentence so it'll read something like "If you live in a household with both cats and dogs, blah blah blah..." (Note that you've used lowercase, so the words flow within the sentence.) Now say that you someday change the destination topic's title to read "Dogs and Cats". Your "cats and dogs" hyperlink will still work, but its text won't change automatically.

-- For a cross-reference, you let Flare grab the phrasing of the destination's heading. (BTW, you'd probably want to change the positioning of the xref so that it appears at the end of the sentence, perhaps in parentheses instead of inline, so that the capitalization works.) If you were to change the heading, Flare will resolve the cross-reference when you build your output so that it reads correctly. You never need to worry about it. Additionally, you can create a variety of formats for how xrefs will read in different targets. For example, I tend to style my xrefs in online outputs (using my stylesheet's default medium) to look just like hyperlinks. But in my print outputs, I style them (in my stylesheet's print or other custom medium) as in traditional books, e.g., see "Cats and Dogs" (page 4). I am trying to do this too (for the very first time). I have added the bookmarks in a topic and I want to link directly to those boomarks from within a snippet. But when I choose Insert Hyperlink, and the select the topic where I have the bookmarks, the bookmarks are not present when I click on the Bookmark button. I am failing.

Just a guess. Have you saved the topic where you put the bookmarks? If you added the bookmarks but haven't yet saved the topic, then Flare can't yet "see" the bookmarks.
