One flare license on two computers

Post by kevinmcl »

All,

The FAQ says this:

How many computers can I install Flare, Mimic, Analyzer and MadCap Lingo?

You may install a second copy of the software on either a portable computer or a home computer for your exclusive use only, provided that: (A) the second copy of the software on the portable or home computer (i) is not used at the same time as the copy of the software on the primary computer and (ii) is used by the primary user solely. The software cannot be used and installed on more than one computer that shares the same domain as the primary license.

My question... um... what level of domain?

I have a corporate laptop that is my work machine when I'm in my cube at the office, and that I haul home when I want to work-from-home. We can't get into the company net from a non-company computer. I have Flare installed on a Virtual Machine instance on the techpubs server at the office. It's on a lab sub-net that is different from the main corporate net for that office. aaa.bbb.11.ddd versus aaa.bbb.10.ddd. I work via Remote Desktop, whether I'm parked in my cube at the office, or standing on my treadmill at home. Oh, and the VPN uses addresses in the aaa.bbb.17.ddd range, so that's what it looks like I'm calling from (or would look like Flare was checking in from) when I'm at my home and VPNing to work.

However, sometimes working over the VPN isn't the greatest, since every single bit must go from my house in Ottawa, Canada, down to Belcamp, Maryland, back up to the office in Ottawa, back down to Belcamp, back up to.... well, you get the idea. There's scope for latency and fall-off and various other annoyances. Seems to vary with the weather and with how tight my current deadline is. So, I'd like to put my same Flare license on the laptop, for use when I'm at home and the connection to the VM at the office is not the best. But it's a company laptop and logs into the company domain. Which seems to be in disagreement with the FAQ, as quoted above.

So far, I haven't had a problem, 'cuz I have Flare 9 installed in one place and 10 in the other. But some day we'll be using 11 all over.

What's the "according to Hoyle" on this one?

Hmm, that definitely sounds like a question for the Sales or Tech Support folk at MadCap.

Something you could try: install Flare 9 on the machine that currently has Flare 10, with the same licence number as your current Flare 9 installation. See what happens. That might be risky though, so you'd want to scratch your head and consider whether you do actually want to do that before you go ahead.
Started as a newbie with Flare 6.1, now using Flare 2024r2.
