Change a Paragraph Style to Character Style

Post by Techno »

I have no idea how, when or why it happened, but two Styles I use appear to have changed from being Character Styles to Paragraph Styles.

Is there any way to change this?

I'm not quite sure what you mean by examples, but will explain the purpose.

I'm illustrating the use of special Codes used within a program.

My main text font for paragraphs is Arial Univers MS.

However I have two character Styles which use Courier New. DBT Code (red) and DBT Text (black). Hence My text might read:

"With the use of the Heading Style Codes [hds] and [hde] your document would appear as:
[hds]Title of our document.[hde]"

What is happening is that if I highlight the [hde] for example and apply the DBT Code Style, the whole line changes to red.

This was all working OK.

I've never heard of a Character Style (which only means I'd like to know more, but Google hasn't heard of them either). Is there a reason you're not using a span for this?

I can't say for sure, but it sounds to me like you're expecting to apply a class (i.e. style) to a span, and instead the class is getting applied to the parent element, in this case, p (paragraph).

I just want to make sure we're on the same page -- I think by character style, you must mean the contextual change the Style menu/drop-down reflects when you highlight characters?
For example:

You must have a strange Google as a search for "Word character styles" brought up a claimed 8+ million results. One which explains things pretty well is here:

I more than suspect that many of my problems are due to the different terminology between applications, as I'm so used to what Word calls things.

Hi MattyQ,

Many thanks for the explanation, though I will have to "translate" the terminology. Being a fairly skilled Word user, Flare is quite a transition.

I think it's a terminology thing. Word has paragraph and character styles, but HTML doesn't go by those names.
If you want to apply a style to a portion of text rather than a whole line, you need to use spans.
I'd use the internal text editor to have a look at your "DBT Code Style" style to see how it is set up. Did you create this style or rely on Flare to generate it from a Word import? Unexpected things can happen during an import. I'd check your CSS and look at the code behind the text you want to apply the styles to.
