Presentations using MADCAP Flare

Post by Johanna »

We would like to use Flare for single sourcing all our documentation including training notes. However, I understood there is no direct export from Flare to Powerpoint and the step through Word and Adobe seems quite complex to me. Anybody using pdf or html5 output directly from Flare for training slides? I can imagine that using a suitable template (larger font sizes, smart placement of figures...) this should be possible. Of course it would not contain animations or other typical Powerpoint effects but in any case this is often overdone and not really necessary for our classroom training purposes.

Any experiences?

Best regards,
Johanna

Hi Johanna. Welcome to the forums! :)

You're right that Flare does not output to PowerPoint. But the solution you have proposed sounds like a great one to me.

I could imagine that you'd have two PDF targets, one that uses page layouts designed to emulate the "screen size" of PowerPoint slides. Although, as you say, you couldn't give the generated PDF output fancy effects like transitions and animations, there's nothing to prevent you from having a very attractive page layout design that include things like branding images. And there's nothing to prevent you from having images and photos in the "slides" themselves. The second PDF could be for the "slide handouts". It would use page layouts that are sized 8.2x11 inches or A4.

I can further imagine that you could conditionalize some content that would emulate the speaker notes. In each topic (with one topic = one slide), you could have additional information that you condition as the speaker notes. Or maybe it would just be extra notes that you want to exclude from the "slides" but include in the "handout". Perhaps, too, you could put all of the "slide" content in a div with a border around it. That way, in the "handout" output, the "slide" material will be in a box with the notes material below.

I'm just tossing out ideas here, jumping off from the idea you yourself have already proposed. Go for it!

RETIRED, but still fond of all the Flare friends I've made. See you around now and then!
