Cross referencing to a step within a topic

Post by MRose730 »

In Flare 10, Is there a quick way to insert a reference to an auto-numbered step within the same topic without inserting a bookmark? For example, a procedure may have a step that states, "If __ occurs, go to step x. If __ occurs, go to step y." I'd like to make these references dynamic to avoid manual updates when step numbers change.

For hyperlinks or cross-references, I only have the options to connect to a heading or bookmark. I was hoping to avoid having to insert bookmarks each time I need to do this, as it's an extra step each time and my list of bookmarks could become a little too unmanageable. I couldn't find a solution in the Flare documentation or on this forum, so I thought I'd see if any of you have found a way to work around this.

I believe the only way to do this is to use bookmarks. We have a naming convention for bookmarks, where the bookmark name says what kind of bookmark it is, so a table bookmark begins with table-; similarly figure-, step-. Bookmarks for headings do not have extra text. This makes the list a little less unwieldy (or perhaps a little more wieldy).

I use it a lot.
And .... it is not a believe. Using a bookmark is the way to do it.
But ... bookmark the location, save your file, drag the file from the Content Explorer to the location you want, right-click the link and edit the cross-reference. Then you select the bookmark.
It is quick and easy.

Don't bookmark anchors automatically update? I was in the impression that they just automatically grabbed the nearby text. I don't think the in-screen display updates until you edit it and relink to the same place, but I thought that it automatically grabbed the correct information on output generation. Is that incorrect?

Correct, they need to be re-linked if you change the bookmark name. It is not needed if the name of the file where the bookmark resides is changed, but that seems logic.
I just made a quick test.
We could request to do it automatically, but what could be a reason to change the name of a bookmark?
