Apparently, words that appear only in the footer (created by a master page, as in the Advanced HTML5 Template) are included in searches. Normally, this is not a problem because much more relevant pages appear first, but if the user searches for a subject that is not heavily covered by the WebHelp, but is in the footer, they get a large amount of "junk" results. The user then has no idea whether the page was missing or if they just couldn't find it.
For instance, my footer includes some references to the "support site", and a user searched for a program feature called "sites" that was (correctly) not included in this version of the output. However, nearly every page was returned as a low-ranking result due to the footer.
How would I go about excluding this content from the search engine, but still including it in my output? Is this possible?
Sorry if this has been covered before, but I haven't managed to find it if so.
Exclude footer from search?
