Hi madcaps,
very silly problem, and would be last thing on a Friday! I have somehow changed something such that the contents (left hand pane) doesn't display the contents after the build, only the heading which then needs to be clicked to show the contents.. what have I done?
I have just noticed that the search filter button has also disappeared, is this related?
thank you....................... liz

Re: Contents not showing until click
Had you been editing the skin? There's an option someplace (I think the General tab) to hide the nav pane; did you accidentally select that? And have you deselected the Search box in the skin, I think on the General tab? (I'm going on memory.)

Hello Nita,
Yes I has been editing the skin, to add two custom buttons to the toolbar. And I had checked this because it seem the obvious thing. However the 'hide navigation pane on startup' is NOt checked and anyway the pane is there just not the contents of the TOC. A for the search box I can't see where I would do that as I can't find it - this is HTML5. I have checked the styles as well and all the search objects are set the same.
The screen looks like this on load:
http://screencast.com/t/5qYgp3HFF
and on clicking Contents I get what I want:
http://screencast.com/t/rXGwD6fkrgBk
The other thing that is missing, possibly a clue, is that the startup topic isn't shown, although specified in the target. I have check conditional flags, changes the startup topic and several other things but it always generates not showing the content. Could I have done something really dumb with the styles, I don't think that should affect anything but I'm clutching a straws here.
It must be something blindingly obvious. My concern is that come monday morning my client is looking at it and for some of them it won't occur to them the click 'contents', and this is the first time they have seen the product so not good

Re: Contents not showing until click
Sorry I left you hanging, Liz.
Couple of questions.
-- In which browsers is this behavior exhibited? Some (and, then, which ones yes, which ones no)? All?
-- If the problem is only in IE, have you turned off Mark of the Web in the target?

Hi Nita,
Have checked Chrome, my default, and IE they both exhibit this behaviour. I am sure it's must be me being dense about something. But I am worried about my client as I am trying to persuade them that Flare would be a good buy. Can I send you the project?

Re: Contents not showing until click
I suggest that you create a whole new skin but don't customize anything about it. Then associate your target with this skin and then build. Do you still get the same result? If no, then the problem is with your customized skin. If yes, then the problem is elsewhere. Re the issue with the startup topic, perhaps you've got a condition set on it and your target is excluding that condition?
Re your request to send me the project, please forgive me, but I must decline. I'm just a volunteer here on the forums. We MVPs try to offer what peer-to-peer support we can, but we aren't a substitute for MadCap tech support. I hope you understand my position.

Re: Contents not showing until click
Hi Niyta,
thanks for the ehlp. I have now created a new skin. I did it vanilla at first to check it worked. then updated to what I really wanted and, touch wood, all working now. I have checked and it it looks identical to the 'bad' skin with the only difference being the custom buttons I was playing with.
By the way, I fully understand about not sending you stuff, sorry I didn't realise that you were independent 0- I thought you were Madcap.
Many Thanks............... liz

Re: Contents not showing until click
Glad to know the vanilla one worked and you can go from there. Clearly then something's amiss in the prior skin.
And thanks for understanding. All we MVPs are volunteers; I'm actually self-employed as a Flare designer and author and generally as a technical writer. The little bits and pieces I offer here are all my gift to the Flare community, which I cherish. When I was climbing the Flare learning curve, I depended heavily on this community. And I still learn something new here almost every day.
