Word Mini-Tocs Missing Items

Post by dorcutt »

So, I've found no sign of this issue anywhere on the forums, but it's been driving me nuts off and on for the past year.

I use Mini-Tocs (depth 2, no other custom styling, "Use TOC Depth" enabled) on my chapter splash pages. For almost all of the chapter pages, only the first one or two items in the mini-toc appear. In addition, a single one of the Chapter Splash minitocs works and displays all 5 items. This is especially baffling because the same snippet is used in each place, and they all have the same structure underneath them. Try as I might, I can find no pattern to why that one minitoc works properly and all the others do not.

Few misc notes:
  • These same mini-TOCS works flawlessly in PDF and online output.
  • The Mini-tocs are located in H1 topics. Following them is a list of H2 topics, most of which have several H3 exercises in them
  • These H2 topics have their own mini-tocs for the H3 items that they contain. These, also, work fine.
  • Changing the order of the H2 exercises only changes which one H2 appears in the mini-toc.
  • Generally speaking, the mini-TOCS stop adding items after the first book-level H2
Anyone ever encounter anything similar to this, or have the foggiest idea what might be causing this?

Dan, I'd go looking in the page layout. Do you maybe have more than one body frame on the page you use for the first pages of your chapters, and is the body frame in which the miniTOC to be included perhaps too short to hold the complete, generated miniTOC? This is just a hunch.

Hi Nita,

It's a good idea, and I'll check it out further and report back. However, I do use Master Pages for my Word output, so it (should) be ignoring the page layout formatting. Also, I'd expect this to be similarly (or even more) messed up in the PDF layout if this was a page layout issue).

However, the Word and PDF output do use the same TOC, so there is a strong possibility that my hyrid TOC method using both Page Layouts and Master Pages might be messing up the chapter-level mini-TOCs somehow.
