Images - Web to Print

Post by jbranigan »

I have some large (that is, wide) screen images in my web-based help.
Now I want to get those images into a pdf document.
Can this be done automatically. If not, how are they resized?

You can do this in two ways:
  • Use mediums in your stylesheet: switch to the Print medium and configure your image tag for a specific size.
  • Use Capture to manage the images: increase the DPI in the Print medium settings (you can batch that in a profile).

You can also set the Print Size for each image in the Properties dialog. I usually set Maximum Width to 600px and Height to Automatic. If you have a lot of images, you can also do this in your stylesheet. In the Stylesheet Editor, set the Medium to Print and set the img styles max-width: 600px and max-height:auto.

I wouldn't use Kwag's 1st suggestion, as that will yield inline formatting, which eventually could trip you up. Better to use Tom's 1st and Kwag's 2nd suggestion to control this via your stylesheet. (And I like the Capture approach too.)

Can you set the max-width to auto? How do you know how many px to set it as?

I want to use thumbnails for html and a larger size for print but not sure what size to set it. I do not use Capture so will I need two different images or can I switch the mediums and adjust the image one way in the web medium and another style in the print medium?

Thanks!

Sorry, I've been off for a few days. If you set max-width to auto, it's going to display in proportion to the max-height setting (which is probably going to be random unless all your images are the same height). I use 600px based on a PDF output of 8.5 x 11 page size.

Thanks!
It doesn't matter whether you use Capture, Snagit, or anything else. You can do this in the Stylesheet. In Medium:Non-Print (or default), set the following properties for the img style:

mc-thumbnail: popup
mc-thumbnail-max-height: 48px
mc-thumbnail-max-width: auto

You can adjust these and (optionally) set the max-height and max-width as desired.

In Medium:Print:

max-height: auto
max-width: 600px
