Possible to have different outputs with different browsers?

Post by BrianBAtCeres »

Hi,

The application installer I’m documenting behaves differently depending on what browser is used and with Chrome and Firefox if a plugin supporting .Net Framework has been installed and enabled. For example, if you use IE it never asks for a license key but if you use Firefox without the plugin it always asks for the license key.

So, my question is, is there any way using Conditional Text to hide portions of a topic if IE is used but to display them when other browsers are used? For example, I want to hide the sections of the topic explaining how to enter the license key from IE users. I’ve been searching the forums here but I haven’t been able to find anything. I’ve searched elsewhere and the closest thing I’ve been able to find is the following discussion on StackOverflow:

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1706 ... t-browsers

Just as an FYI I’m using Flare again after a hiatus so I’m still relearning things. :)

Thanks,
Brian

You could use JavaScript to detect the browser and the use the result to show or hide divs. While clever I wonder if it is worth the effort. Plenty of docs show sections specific to each browser and I see no fault in that. Hiding content based on browser also assumes that the help is viewed through the same browser type that is used for running the application. In this case, it might even be preferred by FF users to know that if they use IE they do not have to reenter the same info over and over.

Good point. I think I'll try rewriting that section. :D
