I think RamonS authored a book in Flare (or was it DocGuy?). Hopefully one of them, or someone else who has done something similar, will chime in...
Madcap used to have a version of Flare for print only, called Blaze. I think they used a recipe book as a sample of its output. That might still be kicking around, because there was little difference between Flare and Blaze, Blaze seems to have slipped off the radar.
If you click the link to the online templates from Flare's start page you might find something that will help. There also a wide range of templates available when you create a new project, again, one might meet your needs.

Wasn't me...sorry. DocGuy did some non-software stuff, but IIRC it wasn't engineering related. Right now I am working on a tiny project that is non-software as well, but I'm using exclusively Flare defaults due to time constraints and the lucky accident that the defaults also fit well and do not look bad.
If I were to use Flare I fully intend to create my own templates. I'm wondering how suitable Flare is to create printed operation manuals as 95% of my work is still created for print.
I don't see any examples out there which makes me slightly hesitant.

The Flare templates, particularly for print, are still worth a look. You might be lucky enough to find one similar to what you want, modifying an existing template is a lot easier than starting from scratch!
