HTML5 vs WebHelp

Post by spinningrachel »

Hi, can someone please enlighten me as to the difference between HTML5 vs. WebHelp and why I would choose one over the other? Also, same question applies to WebHelp vs. WebHelp Plus.

Thank you!

One of the most significant differences is that HTML5 output is responsive, while WebHelp is not.

The HTML5 guide on the MadCap site has a comparison table in Appendix B. It is a good starting point: http://docs.madcapsoftware.com/FlareV11 ... 5Guide.pdf.

Basically, WebHelp was Flare's first web-based help format, and HTML5 Help is its replacement (it's even called 'WebHelp 2' internally).

There are very few reasons to choose WebHelp over HTML5 - possibly only if you need to support old versions of IE (7 or 8).

If you want a nitty-gritty comparison, see:

If you were interested in WebHelp Plus, the same features are available in HTML5 server-based help.

As a side note...old IE versions will be EOL and unsupported by Microsoft is a few months. So that argument should be off the list as well as nobody should encourage using old unpatched versions of IE.

What do you mean when you refer to "HTML5 server-based help"?

You asked the difference between WebHelp and WebHelp Plus; which is that WebHelp Plus has server-based features (see http://webhelp.madcapsoftware.com/flare ... Output.htm).

The equivalent to WebHelp Plus for the HTML5 output is called "HTML5 server-based" help (described in the link I posted).
