Using and applying conditional tags?

Post by aoife2015 »

Hi,
I have a query about using and applying conditional tags.
When I apply a conditional tag to a piece of text/graphic in a topic, I highlight it and open the Conditional Tags dialog box. I select the "Include" check box for the conditional tag I require.
When I want to display the text with a condition tag, I open the Conditional Text dialog box and select the "Include" check box for the conditional tag I want to see.
When I am creating output (such as PDF) I select the "Include" check box for the conditional tag I require to see in the out put on the conditions tab in the target file.
My question is what is the "Exclude" checkboxes for in conditional tags. When would you use them? For instance, I have a topic that includes 3 conditional tags on text. so when I want to see text for tag A, I just use the Include checkbox for the A and this works.
When do we use the "Exclude" checkbox?
Thanks:)

Perhaps I can explain it this way...

When I make a training manual there are 2 versions, one for the facilitator and one for the learner. In the assessment part of the material the facilitator can see the answers for each question, the learner sees a sett of doted lines where they can enter their answer.

Most of the content is common to both versions, so I do not apply a conditional tag.

The answer has a conditional tag corresponding to facilitator guide, the matrix for answering is tagged as learner guide.

In the output I include facilitator guide and exclude learner guide for the facilitator manual. I exclude facilitator guide and include learner guide for the learner's manual.

Hope this makes it a bit clearer.

There is a hierarchy to what gets included and excluded in an output. It can get quite complicated if content (text, graphic, topic) has more than one condition applied to it, and further complicated if you use some conditions just when importing.

Content that has no conditions is always included. There is no way to exclude content that doesn't have a condition applied. So don't apply conditions to stuff you know you want to include in all outputs. (Obviously, for PDF outputs it has to be in the TOC as well.)

Content with one condition where that condition is set to Excluded is excluded.

Content with two or more conditions where one condition is set to Excluded (and none of the other conditions are set to Included) is excluded.

Content with two or more conditions where any of the conditions is set to Included (even if other conditions on the same content is set to Excluded) is included. Included trumps Excluded every time.

You can build quite complex rules if you use the Advanced Condition Editor. The Help file for Flare takes a bit of getting your head round but it's a good place to start.

When I attended Flare basic training a few months back, the trainer suggested that it is better to select the Exclude option to exclude any conditional tagged content that you do not want in your output. Then by default, anything you have not excluded would be included by default.
The original poster mentions "I have a topic that includes 3 conditional tags on text. so when I want to see text for tag A, I just use the Include checkbox for the A and this works". In this case, I guess you could also use the Exclude checkbox to exclude the other conditional tags (say tag B and tag C) and by default text for Tag A would be included. The only time I would use the Include check box is to account for content that has more than one conditional tag applied to it and I want to insure that it is included. So I primarily use the Exclude check box and only use the Include check box for exceptions. Is this the approach other people use?

According to Flare's help "If you want to be safe and always know that the correct tags are included or excluded, you can make sure that all of the tags have check marks with either Include or Exclude". Maybe this is the best approach going forward?
