Images missing in preview and output
Images missing in preview and output
I'm using Flare 10, HTML5 output on IE 11.
For some reason, some of my image files are showing up missing in the topic preview and final output, even though the images display correctly in the XML editor. These images have displayed correctly in the past and no images have ever been moved or renamed. The only thing I'm doing differently is I'm starting to add drop-down text to my topics, but this is happening even when no drop-down text is added. Does anyone know what might be going wrong?

Re: Images missing in preview and output
This commonly happens if you paste content from one Flare project into another.
One way to quickly check whether the images are in the project is:
1. right click on the image, them select Image Properties.
2. When the image properties window displays, click OK. If the image is located outside of the project, you will be prompted to save them.

Re: Images missing in preview and output
Tried opening the Image Properties, but it didn't help. The images in my project have never been moved or renamed and I haven't copied another project into this one, so I'm not sure why now the links appear to be broken when they displayed fine before. Also, the Project Analysis shows no broken links in the project.
*EDIT: Works fine in Chrome so I'm pretty sure it's an issue with IE not displaying images correctly. Gotta love Microsoft.

Re: Images missing in preview and output
If it only happens in IE, it's probably some of that Mark-of-the-web brokenness.
Microsoft implemented some weird restrictions on local files in IE in a misguided attempt at security. Scripts (including the javascript needed to load the TOC pane in tripane output) are prevented from running, with one of those all-too-common security notices, in local HTML files. Microsoft provides a workaround to enable this, by putting an HTML comment called Mark of the Web in each file. This lets the files run in the internet zone, which allows those scripts to run with the same restrictions they would normally have running on a web site. However, doing this imposes a different set of restrictions on your content; links to anything other than the most simple web file formats (.htm, .html, .css, .js, .gif, .jpg, .png) will fail with no explanation. Normally we see this when people want to include PDFs in their help, but it could happen if you have some uncommon image format like a .bmp or something.

Re: Images missing in preview and output
I inserted the Mark of the Web which took care of the security notice, but the images still won't appear. The broken images are all .gifs so I thought it might have something to do with the way IE handles .gifs, but other .gifs display correctly elsewhere in the project. The search continues...

Might I suggest 'cleaning' the project and trying to rebuild? Use the Clean Project button from the Build group on the Project tab.awells12 wrote:I inserted the Mark of the Web which took care of the security notice, but the images still won't appear. The other issue might be caching from IE so you are looking at cached, rather than current, content.

Cleaned and rebuilt the project AND cleared the IE cache...still not working.

Re: Images missing in preview and output
There is quite a bit of stuff about this on the Internet, suggesting it might be a fairly widespread problem.

Are the images coming from the same source? Has anyone manipulated the images that aren't (or are) showing?
Has anyone tried to set image transparency on the images that aren't (or are) showing?

Re: Images missing in preview and output
I have tried all of those suggestions with no success. The images haven't been manipulated at all as far as I know (the only other person with access to this project through source control is my boss). The images were displaying fine until about a week ago. I'm going to try viewing the project from a different machine; if the issue lies just within my personal computer, I might just ignore it.

Hi,
I am having the same problem with one image - shows up in IE but not Chrome. Did you find a solution for this?
Thanks
Adrian

Re: Images missing in preview and output
Never mind, I found the problem! Although the image file has the extension PNG looking at the file in a text editor shows that it is in fact a JPG (JFIF). It seems IE does not support this whereas Chrome is fine with it. Changing the extension to JPG fixes it.RiverMonster wrote:Hi,
