favicons? No longer used?

Post by sdcinvan »

Hello all,

I hope everyone had a good Christmas/holiday rest.

I have a bit of an OT question.

I noticed that the latest version of FireFox does not display the favicon. My HTML5 documentation has a favicon (in the root) but it only appears with Chrome and Internet Explorer 11 (I have only tested with these three browsers).

Even manually added the following to the header of the start page:

Code: Select all

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon">
<link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon">
...made no apparent difference, in Firefox. :(

Thanks for your input.

Favicons get cached by the browser. I suggest clearing the cache and trying again. Only then it is possible to make a verdict. It might have worked for IE11 because that is typically the browser that people use the least.

Thanks Ramon,

Within a few minutes of posting that message, I realized that I made a huge error (not sure what I was thinking) in that the favicon is actually seen in the tab, rather than to the left of the URL. I had began editing my original post but got distracted until now. Silly me!

But it is still not working in Firefox (just my documentation). I have cleared the cache and reset other features in Firefox... nothing seems to help.

If I am the only one with this issue, I'll assume it is a local problem.

Next, I will shut down Firefox and reset it with a fresh profile.

If possible also use it through a different ISP or if it is public post the URL and we can try it out. In some cases ISPs cache as well (proxy cache). You may also want to see if there is a server side caching. If you use IIS edit the web.config of the site, save, then edit back and save again. That will clear the server side cache. You can also issue an iisreset, but that will reset the entire IIS (thus the name) and cut off all current connections. For Apache restarting the service might do it, but I am not up on how Apache does server side caching.

Update: I restarted Firefox with a clean profile... favicon worked! :)
Shut down and restarted Firefox in my working profile and found that the favicon now appears in the tab. Problem solved! :)

Update 2: Definitely a workstation/browser-side issue.

Thanks for your assist Ramon! :)
