Import Word Pictures rotated

Post by jkpalmer »

I have a document that contains picture images.

After importing the word document into my project, all the pictures were rotated 90 degrees counter-clockwise.

Any idea why and is there an easy fix?

I can only guess that they were imported as such in Word and then rotated within the document. As to what to do depends on the number of images. Given that they come from a Word doc the number cannot be huge. I'd suggest finding a decent graphics tool, load all pictures in and then close the ones that are fine and rotate & save the ones that are on the side. Once done open up all topics and reset the size for the images. That will be a tedious task, but one that can be done in the shortest time....unless the plan is to sync with the Word document and reimport when building output in Flare. In that case I suggest saving the images out in Word, rotate, and add back in.
I don't recall any settings in Flare that allows for image rotation during import. The only other idea I have is to use javascript to rotate the images when loading each topic assuming you output to WebHelp / HTML5 Help. While possible that seems to be a rather convoluted fix.

Quick question: are Flare and Word using the same page orientation?

'nother question: have the images been imported into Word and rotated using Word's drawing/ image tools?

I went through my process again.

Here are the steps that I went through
Created a word document on an Apple machine using Word for Mac
Copied images/pictures that were created using Apple iPhone, copied from iPhoto to a folder on the Mac desktop
Saved the word document to a google drive
(It was at this point that I believe the images were rotated. I know that I did not rotate the images. They were copied and appeared correctly in the word document prior to me saving the Word document and then importing into Flare).
Started Flare on a Windows machine
Imported the Word document into my Flare project and noticed that all the images were rotated.

Not sure where the rotation is happening, but did realize that it is not the Flare import process.

Sorry to raise the issue.

A little more information

I confirmed that the images appeared correctly in the Word document on my Apple machine.

The PC that I have Flare installed is a Windows 10 machine. It does NOT have Word installed on it.

I set up Flare to import if Word is not installed. Same result images were rotated 90 degrees counter-clockwise.

I then opened the document using the default application on the Windows 10 machine (Word Pad is used to open the document) and the images are rotated, so it appears that Windows 10 might be the cause.

Hi there,

If there are too many images to rotate manually, you could use a script to update them.

For example, the following Powershell script should rotate all images in a folder:

Disclaimer: The below did seem to work on my machine, but I'm no Powershell expert so use this at your own risk!

Code: Select all

cls

$ImageDirectory = "C:\ExampleImageDirectory"
$RotationAngle="Rotate270FlipNone"

[Reflection.Assembly]::LoadWithPartialName("System.Windows.Forms");

$Files = Get-ChildItem $ImageDirectory -Include @("*.png","*.bmp","*.jpg","*.gif") -rec

for($i=1; $i -lt $Files.Count; $i++)
{
$image = new-object System.Drawing.Bitmap $Files[$i].FullName;
$image.rotateflip($RotationAngle);
$image.Save($Files[$i].FullName);
Write-Host $Files[$i].FullName
}
For this to work you need to set the $ImageDirectory and $RotationAngle variables to the appropriate values for your site.

See the following link for a list of rotation angles that you can enter:

Finally, for more information about running powershell scripts, see here:

So here's another question: Is the image rotated by the iphone? I'm wondering if there is some form of auto-rotate in play that falls over by the time you get it to your production machine.

It's difficult to determine where the rotation is occurring.

Looking at the images in Word for Mac, the images look fine in the document, as well as in the Apple finder / preview option, i.e. not rotated.

I don't have Word installed on the PC where I have Flare installed, but when I open the file on that PC using a different word processor (I think it's WordPad), the images are rotated.

If I open the file on a Windows 7 machine with Word installed, the images are fine as well, which points to Windows 10.....

Strange.
