Text Editor - how do I tell Flare to keep my formatting

Post by Nina Esile »

Good Morning,

I work in the Text Editor a lot. I would like it to maintain the spacing, line breaks and so forth within that window. I'm not talking about extra spacing that is removed by html. I'm talking about indented structure, line breaks and so forth. It seems that whenever I leave that window, Flare lumps all the text together regardless of indents or line breaks I've manually created.

I am aware of the Word Wrap toggle, which is good, but then each block becomes really long so that I have to scroll across the screen for a long time.

What I'm looking for is for blocks to wrap at the edge of my window, whatever the size, the way true text editors work, such as Sublime Text or Edit Plus. Spoil me.

Ideas?

Yep. I agree; it's extremely frustrating.
My workaround is:
Open the topic in the XML editor
Open it again using Notepad++
find >< replace with >\r\n<
reindent
and edit it in Notepad++
When saved, the XML editor version will update.

Not ideal but a quick fix.

Have there really been no improvements in this area? I am scrubbing a monster sized project, migrated from Robohelp, and find that I lose the formatting every time I switch between XML and the Text Editor views. This is EXTREMELY frustrating when you are trying to clean up messy HTML. It is particularly evil with list elements.

I am using Flare 12 and would expect that after so many years that this was posted, perhaps a fix would have been put in place to preserve the indents/returns of the original source file? Or is there a property or setting that is allowing/encouraging Flare to clobber this.

I hope someone can help. It is very tedious to keep redoing the formatting of the HTML to clean up successive issues in the same topic.

Ah. Ok. I thought this seemed a bit of a pain, but honestly, Altova XMLSpy does a MUCH better job of tracing lost tags, so I'm opening my source there. Thanks for the suggestion.

We had the same problem with wrapped XML lines. In our case we had some text inside a <div> that didn't have a <p>, and that caused the collapse. Example

<div id="helpContent">
This is how you cook an egg.
<ul>
<li>Boil water.</li>
<li>Toss in the egg.</li>
<li>Let it cook.</li>
<li>Let it cool.</li>
</ul>
</div>

The first sentence doesn't have a surrounding <p> tag. Adding the tag corrected the XML formatting.
