Build time web based outputs

Hi,

Could someone please throw some light on this? I have a Flare project with about 400 topics. I have both print and online targets. One of the online targets publishes about 300 topics, and the other about 30 topics. I use the second one (the one with fewer topics) mainly for testing before I change the other target. The build time of both the online targets is considerable. I understand that for the target with many topics, building the search, index etc takes time (as mentioned in other posts), but why is it that the target with fewer topics takes the same time

I do not have any issues with the print targets. I am running Flare12/64 on Windows 7. Also, both the online targets are set to exclude topics not linked directly in the output.

Hi Deepti,

By default, all topics in your Content Explorer get built when you build your online target, regardless of what is in the TOC. It's a common (yet understandable) misconception that online targets build only what is in the TOC. If you were to open your output folder and look at the output files, my guess is that you're going to see all 400 topics. One way to keep this from happening is to select the "Exclude content not linked directly or indirectly from the target" option in the Advanced tab of the Target.

Give that a try and see if it helps.

Hi Daniel,

I have set that option. I can see all those other topics not included in the target in the Compile Status field of the build window. I wonder why Flare compiles those topics when they are not included in the TOC and when the exclude topics option is set.

For online outputs, Flare includes all the files that TOC files link to, even if those files aren't included in the TOC. So if you have a topic in the TOC that links to a topic that is not in the TOC, that second topic will be built and included in the output (even though it won't show in the TOC of the output). Is it possible in your case that a bunch of topics are linked from the topics that are in the TOC?

Thanks Daniel. You are right There were many links as I had created some template topics and had many links. I have removed the links and the compile time is much better now.
