Changing folder hierarchy throws invalid path error

Post by berniexmeyer »

I decided I had an unnecessary layer of hierarchy in my topic folder structure. Let's say the unnecessary folder name was "SuperfluousFolder."

WHAT I DID

1. I moved all the subfolders out of "SuperfluousFolder" to a level parallel with it, and selected to Update Links in every case.
2. I deleted "Superfluous Folder".
3. I did a Save All.
====
WHAT HAPPENED

When I tried to create a new topic ANYWHERE in the project hierarchy (not just under the moved folders), I got an error that said:
"The path blah/blah/SuperfluousFolder/TopicName.Htm does not exist."

I could open any of the existing topics, no problem, just could not create any new ones without creating that error msg.
When I recreated "SuperfluousFolder" and put everything back the way it was, the problem went away.

MY PLEA
Does anyone have any experience or insight on this type of problem?

Are you using any internal linking to source control? That might be messing you about, perhaps.
Started as a newbie with Flare 6.1, now using Flare 2024r2.

How are you creating new topics? If you're not starting at any particular folder, Flare is trying to default to the last folder to which you added a topic. So try this experiment. Right-click any folder that contains topics and select New > Topic. Does Flare let you make a new topic this way? If yes, is that enough to "reset" the remembered folder?

I am not linked to source control that I know of; I copied this project from a central location; the prior owner may have had source control linked in; I'll check. How might being linked to source control cause a problem?

As to how I create new topics; I always right clicked on whatever folder I wanted the new topic in, and selected New Topic.

Well, I guess the next thing I'd do Is the usual troubleshooting task of, with the project closed, deleting the Analyzer, Output, and Project\Users folders. (And if you haven't been using External Resources but find a FileSync folder, remove that one, too.) Then reopen the project, give Flare a few minutes to rebuild the Analyzer folder, and then try to add a topic.

If all that fails, then I'd resort to reinstalling Flare. (Perhaps deactivate it first, then reinstall, then reactivate.)

If that fails, then I'd toss this to tech support.
