link originating in a popup

Post by Nina Esile »

Hi folks,

I need a little advice. I've got some topics that I want to appear as popups over other topics (in this case, an image map). Inside the popup, there may or may not be other links. My questions are these:

What do you use as the target window for topics linked from a popup? When I use the same popup window, it looks bad.

Do you have Related Information topics at the bottom of a popup? I think it looks kind of goofy.

Hi Nina. There is no right or wrong answer here. Basically this boils down to your preference. Personally, I avoid popups unless there is a compelling reason to use one. It would seem to me an image that contains hotspots would be to big for a popup window. I agree with you that a related topics control appears misplaced. My advice would be that if you are using popups, do not link to anything from them.

I don't think I made myself clear. I've got a topic with an image map. From that image map, folks can click on hotspots that then open a popup. It's those popups that're my concern. If there's a link in one of those popups, what do I use as the target window?

I think you've answered my question, though. My preference is to have a small popup window that is the same as MadCap's own Text Popup, but I can't exactly figure out how to execute that. So as a second choice, I've linked to full-blown topics that appear in a popup. But I don't really like their appearance. I don't like the Related Information at the bottom of text in a popup. And so on... you get the idea.

Thanks roboHal. Happy Monday!

I misunderstood. I thought the image map was appearing in the popup. In any case, just use Hyperlink>Topic Popup and choose whatever Target Frame you think looks best. The popup is automatically sized according to the content so perhaps using popup window as the target frame makes the most sense when the link is chosen from within a popup.
