V11 Related Topics problem -- links and H1 text

Post by Phlawm53 »

For Flare 11, fully updated, W7 64-bit, HTML5 TopNav template.
  • An HTML5 TopNav project's TOC does link to a second topic BUT a Related Links control's link does NOT link to the same topic.
  • A related problem is that the Related Link text is the filename, not the topic's H1.
  • Investigation shows that when Flare 11 processes the Related Link control, it repeats part of the link so that the Related Topic link becomes invalid. The obvious result == "Topic Not found".
Steps:
  1. In a simple demo topic, I insert a Related Links control. When I do I browse to the file -- no keyin errors.

  2. I Build the project, then view it in a browser. NOTE that the result Related Topic link is the topic's filename, not the topic's H1; and creating a bookmark to top, et cetera, doesn't remediate this.

  3. IF I click the Related Topics link, THEN I receive a file not found error. The invalid Related Topic link points to:

    Code: Select all

    file:///C:/FlareProjects/DitaExampleProject/Output/HTML5%20-%20Audience%20A/Content/StructuredAuthoringDemo/StructuredAuthoringDemo/FlareConceptTopicCreation.htm

  4. IF in the top of the same topic I click that same topic's mini-TOC entry, THEN I receive that topic. The valid mini-TOC link points to:

    Code: Select all

    file:///C:/FlareProjects/DitaExampleProject/Output/HTML5%20-%20Audience%20A/Content/StructuredAuthoringDemo/FlareConceptTopicCreation.htm
OBSERVE that the invalid link contains TWO INSTANCES of /StructuredAuthoringDemo/
What's going on? I've tried viewing the V11 online help but came up empty.

I can often work through these sort of issues but I'm stuck.

Cheers & thanks for your help,
Riley

Riley, I can't say why the link isn't working, but I have an idea why it might be giving you the filename rather than the heading text. In that topic, do you see a <title> tag (it'll be in the <head> tag) and does it read the same as the filename? I'm pretty sure that Related Topic links will use the title tags if they exist for link text. If you get rid of the title tag, Flare will use the first heading for the link text.

This probably doesn't help, but I thought I'd at least throw it out there.

RETIRED, but still fond of all the Flare friends I've made. See you around now and then!

Well I somehow resolved my own problem. But I have no idea how.

To recap, this was a very simple two-topics demo project I created for someone. I based it on Flare 11's HTML5 tripane help and deleted the template's default topic files because I didn't need any of them.

At that point the two-topics project built without errors and everything worked EXCEPT:

The Related Topics link wasn't working per the initial description given at the start of this thread.

I also noticed that the Previous Topic / Next Topic icons didn't work. Which was puzzling because the project's TOC worked just fine.

But because this project was only a quickie demo for a colleague I was merely annoyed; these issues weren't show stoppers.

This morning I was finishing the project up so for fun I:

1. Moved my two topics out of the sub-folder I created for them into the project's top-level Content folder.

2. Deleted then reinserted a new Related Topics control.

When I re-built the project, I noticed that the Related Topics link now was linked-to the target topic's H1 text, the Related Topics link now worked, and so too did the project's Previous/Next icons.

3.I next moved the two topics back into the sub-folder that I'd moved them out of in Step 1, above, rebuilt the project, and tested the Related Topics link and icons. They both still worked.

I only wish I knew how I managed to somehow put things right. Sigh...

Cheers & hope this helps,
Riley
