TopNav output Search doesn't work

Post by Vinita »

Hi there.

I am unable to generate search results from my flare files. I went through multiple threads in this forum, yet the solution eludes me.
I am using a Top Nav Skin. So, right now I have a Search Bar that just won't search. The cursor blinks and all that, but there is not even a whiff of Search Results.

So far I have tried to:
  • Create a Search.htm file. Insert a SearchResultsProxy and place the file under Resources/Masterpages. No results.

Include SearchResultsProxy in Home.htm. This is the only place where I can see the results. But, it is not the right approach, because then I can obtain results only on this page and not the other topics.

Include the SearchResultsProxy in MasterPages, and ended up with build errors.
I am at my wit's end. Can someone please tell me where I am going wrong?

Thanks,
Vinita

Hi Vinita, welcome to the Flare forums!

I hope you don't mind, but I split your topic from the one where it was to a new topic, since it is really on a different subject than the thread where it was before.

I think this is a case where you should call MadCap support and see if they can help you figure out what the problem is in your project.

Some steps to try first: Create a brand new project with minimal content (a page or two is fine), and then build the TopNav output there. When you use Search does it work? If yes, then there is a problem with your project. Of no, then there is a problem with your computer/software.

In TopNav output, I never use a search proxy. Search is something that should just work without you having to do anything additional to make it work.

You should only have ONE search results proxy in the project - it has to be in a topic, and not a master page.

Hi,

I tried opening a new project and inserting topics one-by-one. And I found the issue. I had JSQuery and Bootstrap files included in my home.htm. Due to this search was not working. Now, I have removed the files and the searchresultsproxy too. Search works perfectly fine.

Thank you! :D

My search didn't work for a while, but for a different reason, so I will post my solution here so someone else can find it and maybe be helped.

I looked all over for a switch somewhere, and tried all the other solutions suggested in this forum; I thought I looked everywhere. I discovered that when I searched for a very obvious term (company name), I got results from the Glossary file. So this was the clue I needed.

1. In Content Explorer, right-click on the source file and choose Properties.
2. Select the Topic Properties tab.
3. Ensure that Include topic when full-text search is generated is enabled. (My files were NOT enabled - palm to forehead - because I thought this was the default.)

It seems so obvious now. I hope this fixes your issue, too.

Chalk it up to Flare being feature-rich because the answer is usually in the software, if you can find it.
