Configuration of the Search-Box

Post by PhilipBogner »

Hey Guys,

one of our products called "M.A.R.S". The Problem is, that the most of our customers enter "mars" into the search-box to find topics relating to our M.A.R.S-Product.

Is it possible to configure the searchbox that symbols like points, hyphens will ignored by the box?

Search for mars will find -> M.A.R.S

Hope u know what i mean.

Hi,
you need to have a synonym file in your project. It is located in Project\Advanced with a file extension *.mcsyns. In this file, you enter misspelled search terms or words in a completely different meaning that will show a search result that you intend to be found. Whenever such a file is in the project, it will be regarded when building the help system.

In the synonym editor, enter "mars" in the "Word" column. That's the word, that users enter to find your product name, but doesn't exist in your help.
In the "Synonym" column, enter "M.A.R.S". That's the term that will be found in help when users enter "mars".

You can also have other term pairs in the synonym file to cover different spelling or case sensitive writing, such as "MARS > M.A.R.S." or "Mars > M.A.R.S."
This will work for all kinds of terms entered by the user that you want to be mapped to the correct terms. Make sure to have as much misspelled cases as possible to point to the correct synonym term.

However, synonyms in Flare must be single words. It is not possible to use phrases or groups of words separated by a blank as a synonym. So it will be neccessary to test if single characters with dots between them (such as "M.A.R.S") will be accepted as a correct synonym term. In some programming languages, dots are accepted if the are set in brackets (M"."A"."R"."S"."). But I haven't tested that.

Hope it helps

I'm not sure if synonyms can include full stops (periods), but test it out.

I remember having trouble a while back with synonyms - they can't contain certain characters, and if they're invalid they can actually break the search for those terms.
