O helpful people.
I have created PDF output and am mostly happy with the result, except for one blocker that I can't resolve. A giant CHAPTER heading appears at the top of every topic I set with a chapter break in my TOC (First Right page layout).
It's too big--it wraps. (Designed to be flipped at a 90-degree angle, no doubt.)
I found the auto-generated style for the Contents page (p.TOCHeading), but I cannot find where CHAPTER comes from in the css file. I have scanned both the Flare Print Output and Styles guides but I'm not finding any guidance. I also examined Heading Styles, Paragraph Styles, Generated Content Styles and Auto-numbered Styles ... no joy.
Also, I don't give two doodlies about displaying CHAPTER n on these First Right pages. I'd be just as happy to have that label disappear and use only the topic heading. In fact, I would probably get rid of these headings if I knew how to, but for now I'd be content with resizing the font.
Where is this style??

Re: Where can I edit CHAPTER n style in print layout?
Can you post the code behind one of your offending topics? If it's not in there, it might be in the page layout so posting the code for that page layout might help us track down the problem. I suspect the First Right page that you mention might have something offensive
in there.

Re: Where can I edit CHAPTER n style in print layout?
Here's the start of a misbehaving topic (with the supersized CHAPTER heading):
In my style sheet's @media print block, I found this:
The font-size above is for the text I type (e.g., Software Architecture Layers), not the auto-generated CHAPTER N heading that appears to be at least 92pt.
I'm pretty sure it's the mc-auto-number-format: 'CH:CHAPTER {chapnum} that I need access to. But after searching the v12 FlareStylesGuide.pdf for 'mc-auto-number-format', I got zero results. Same wah wah wah for 'MadCap:autonum.'
I also looked for mc-auto-number-format in Heading Styles > h1 > Unclassified. Nada. I found an mc-heading-format, but it's just an empty field.
At a minimum, I just need to reduce the font size of CHAPTER so it doesn't wrap.
I am so close to a deadline (including deliverable of PDF output) that I worry about just diving in and trying stuff. As the lone writer, I have no local colleagues to bounce ideas off. </violins>
I am wondering if I edit the source to remove <h1 MadCap:autonum="CHAPTER 1 ">Software Architecture Layers</h1> in each of the designated First Right pages, will that help resolve my issue. But I really do want to know how to change the font size. That seems far less risky!
Meanwhile, here's an example of how I set up my TOC for print output. Each of the topics intended to be a "chapter" break is set up the same way (with the exception that all that follow the first one after the TOC do not reset to 1. (Apologies for the teensy font--I'm working without an external monitor today and Flare interface is very small on a VM)
Code: Select all
<head>
<link href="../../../Resources/Stylesheets/MainStyles.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
</head>
<body>
<h1 MadCap:autonum="CHAPTER 1 ">Software Architecture Layers</h1>Code: Select all
h1
{
background-color: transparent;
border-bottom: none;
font-size: 22pt;
line-height: 24pt;
margin-bottom: 20px;
margin-left: 0;
mc-auto-number-class: ChapAutoNum;
mc-auto-number-format: 'CH:CHAPTER {chapnum} ';
padding-left: 0px;
padding-top: 0px;
color: #135296;
font-family: Calibri;
}

Re: Where can I edit CHAPTER n style in print layout?
Getting warmer ...
In the Stylesheet Editor / print medium, I filtered on Heading Styles, opened h1, and opened AutoNumber.
There I found mc-auto-number-format with value CH:CHAPTER {chapnum} next to an ellipsis.
I clicked the ellipsis, and in the Auto-Number-Format dialog that popped up, I selected Show Format Commands from the drop-down menu.
There's a {size} element (defaulting to 12), but when I double clicked it and edited the value, the preview didn't change.
Also, it's pretty clear from my original screen capture that the CHAPTER font is not set to 12, so does anyone know where the value is set?

Re: Where can I edit CHAPTER n font size in print layout?
AFAIK auto number inherits the format of the element where it is applied. If you have the styles window open the element style should be shown when the element is active.
I'd open the style sheet in a text editor and conduct a search for font-size: to see if I can find anything where the font size is larger than expected. Be on the lookout for percentages, ems, and other relative sizing as well as an explicit font size.
Don't forget the print media is used by browsers to control printing, it is not used to control printed documentation from within Flare.

Brilliant! I found this:SteveS wrote:I'd open the style sheet in a text editor and conduct a search for font-size: to see if I can find anything where the font size is larger than expected. Be on the lookout for percentages, ems, and other relative sizing as well as an explicit font size.
Code: Select all
span.ChapAutoNum
{
color: #3e3e3e;
font-family: 'Century Gothic';
font-size: 90pt;
letter-spacing: -1px;
}Now that I know where the style is, I can do more experimenting. For example, 75pt might not be small enough if the chapter numbers get into the double digits.
Thanks very much!
