The Find box won't accept typed text

Post by JeromeR »

Hi,

I've noticed this problem lately, and I wonder if I'm missing something?

In the Find and Replace in Files pane, in its Find box, when I click in the box, it gets focus, as expected. In other words, the insertion point—the blinking cursor—appears in the Find box I clicked. However, when I try to type text in that box, the text does not appear in the Find box, nor does it seem to appear anywhere else in Flare. As a result, I cannot easily search my project.

Interestingly, I can cut and paste text into the Find box, and then successfully search.

What's the trick to typing in this Find box?

I have noticed that after bringing up the find window I have to click on the topic I want it to look in before I can type text. If you go and copy some text to paste in maybe you do that step without realising?

Just a thought

Unfortunately, this is a long standing bug mentioned in a bunch of posts. MadCap recommends a fix at the end of this post: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=18525&start=25

It's a problem that will likely reoccur. You can sometimes get around it in the short term by just restarting Flare. I've also had some success getting it to work again by starting and stopping a few times quickly a longish Find operation, but that only works inconsistently.

Ha ha! Use the Find box to search for the text … that I just copied from a topic and pasted into the Find box?

So where do we vote for bugs to fix? I mean—do any of us need more features? or do we need usability?

Developers think that the whole world can just fix things by editing the registry.

MadCap end users who work in a mid-sized or large corporation know they cannot access the registry of their computer.

This workaround is not feasible. But thanks for confirming that I can stop looking for a fix and get on with putting up. That's the silver lining.
