Unable to move files and other issues

Post by lisabarry »

Hi,

I recently started migrating approx. 150 Word documents into Flare. I managed to import approx. 40 without any major issues. However, recently I have started experiencing a number of issues, that I'm guessing could be related:
[*] Part of my migration process is to move the imported documentation folder into a different folder after the import (we have different folders for different products). Previously I could move these files without any issues. Now I am getting an error "Unable to move file... Its current status is 'NewInWorkdir'. Some time later I will be able to move it (not sure what changes in between). However, it doesn't ask me to update the links on the second attempt - and therefore all of my TOC links are broken and have to be relinked, among other issues such as the style sheet link being broken.
[*] I get a similar error now when trying to rename targets. Again, I seem to be able to rename them after some time.
[*] Sometimes, the TOC I want to set as the Master TOC in the target is not available in the Master TOC drop-down list (even though it exists).

These issues seem to have started occurring at the same time. I'm trying to figure out what could have caused these issues. There are two major things that have changed lately:
[*] Another author has also started migrating documents (previously it was only myself). We are using GitHub and that integration seems to be working OK. The other author is also experiencing similar errors when trying to move and rename items.
[*] Due to the fact that there are now multiple authors, I recently changed the Output Folder for the targets to a shared network drive (X:/Flare) instead of a Dropbox folder (because the path to the Dropbox folder varies per user).

I can't think of any reason why these two changes would cause these types of problem, so maybe they are red herrings.

Does anyone have any idea how I can stop these errors from occurring?

Thanks,
Lisa

Hi Lisa. I honestly have no familiarity with GitHub, but from what I've gleaned over the years it is a type of source control hosted on a web server. In any case, I can suggest the following (no particular order).

- Unbind your project from GitHub and attempt the same operations. if successful, re-bind afterwards.

- use this procedure which MadCap Tech Support provides for the types of issues you are reporting. Of course you can perform a backup prior if needed/wanted.
> Close Flare.
> Browse to the folder with your Flare project using Windows Explorer
> Delete the Analyzer and Output folder(or move the Output folder to a
> different location if you do not want to lose any previously built
> outputs)
> Browse into your Project folder and delete the "Users" folder inside

Hope that helps. :|

Hi,

Your second suggestion seems to have worked... well I had an issue first (it was hanging on Computing dependency set when I tried to rename a target), but I tried the following solution that I found here: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=16023

Navigate to:
C drive
Users
Your User
Appdata (make sure hidden files and folders are turn on)
Roaming Madcapsoftware
Flare
Delete the CatapulMdiEdito folder

then restart flare and try again

----------

That seems to have solved the hanging problem.

All seems to be working relatively OK now.

Thanks for your help! :)

I'm getting these issues, too. If you're using Git, you have to Commit the new files first, then move them. After doing that, I've never got that problem.

However, not Commit-ing the files first isn't always consistent, and that was confusing at first. It sometimes moved them and sometimes didn't.
