Top Navigation Expandable Menu

I'd like to set up the top navigation menu to expand within the same menu rather than off to the left or right side. Can this be done with some custom java, and does anyone have experience making this work? I found a way to do this with the menu proxy by adding java to the master page (from code posted in this forum) and that works great! Now, I just need to figure out how to do it with the top menu. Any ideas?
