Automatic Numbering Issues...

Post by netwrk219 »

I write training guides for my company and we offer numbered steps with a centered image below it that will have a caption. We created a style sheet to work from that will automatically number our steps, but when I insert an image, Flare applies automatic numbering to the image as well. If I turn off numbering for the image and pick it up again below the image (for the next step), the numbering restarts at 1. How can I get the numbering to continue from the previous number? Is there a way to accomplish this?

I'm assuming you are using auto numbering, rather than an ordered list (OL).

There are quite a few topics on the forum relating to Flare's autonumbering.

However, as a starting point try this:

Create a style (classes) you can use for formatting objects (such as paragraphs) you wish to number.

Code: Select all

.NewList{
mc-auto-number-format: A:{Gn=1}.0 ';
}

.FirstLevel{
mc-auto-number-format: A:{Gn+}.0 ';
}

.NextLevel{
margin-left: 5em;
mc-auto-number-format: A:{Gn}.{Gn+} ';
}
This is a multilevel list. If you don't want multilevel omit the .0 from NewList and FirstLevel and don't create NextLevel

These styles will then be available from the styles window. Because they are generic styles you won't be limited to paragraphs.

Use NewList whenever you want to start a list from 1. FirstLevel is then used to number subsequent list items.

Here is the code we are using. The problem has been that we can't pick the numbering up from where we left off after adding a photograph, paragraph or a special callout (Warning message or Quality Instruction).

Code: Select all

/* --------------- Multiple level outline list for steps --------------- */

ol.MultiLevelSteps	/*Outline numbered list levels*/
{
	list-style-type: decimal;
	/* level 1, arabic numerals, 1,2,3 */
}

ol.MultiLevelSteps > li > ol
{
	list-style-type: lower-alpha;
	/* level 2, lower-alphabetic characters, a,b,c */
}

ol.MultiLevelSteps > li > ol > li > ol
{
	list-style-type: lower-roman;
	/* level 3, lower-roman numerals, i,ii,iii */
}
A solution one of my peers came up with was to go to list actions and select "Continue Sequence". Since we are all new to Flare, we aren't sure if this would be considered a good workaround or not. I've read on the forums about using CSS vs. complex selectors, though I'm still researching that to see if it relates to my issue and can provide a proper resolution.

I will also test with the code you provided. Thanks for that!

Keith,

I'm guessing that, in order to add the paragraphs that hold the figure title and image, you are stopping the list, adding the paragraphs, and then starting a new list and using "Continue Sequence" to continue the numbering. Am I warm?

If so, you instead should be nesting the paragraphs inside the list items. You do this by using the "Make Paragraph Items" option when you right-click a list item's li block. (Or you can use the shortcut Ctrl+; [semicolon].)

Check out this topic in the Flare Help: http://help.madcapsoftware.com/flare201 ... _Items.htm. I realize that you're not trying to include notes inside a list item, but the principle is the same.

If I have misunderstood how you're doing the lists, apologies... I'll try again.
