Unique Topic "ID"

Post by jkpalmer »

Hi,

I have several Flare projects where the topic content is frequently subject to change by general business users, who in turn would request that either the Flare Administrator or a Contributor incorporate the requested change in the source document(s).

In an effort to simplify the identification of a topic to the general business, it was suggested that each Flare topic have a "system generated" topic ID, which would be placed on the bottom of each topic page. When a business user identifies that a topic needs revision, they would reference the topic by the topic "ID".

Has anyone ever heard of a requirement similar to this and if so, what is the best practice to accomplish this?

Looking for suggestions or solutions.

Regards,

Hi Jim. I have a similar need in that if a reader of the documentation wants or needs to request something, I do provide them with a topic identifier. In my case I use the system file name variable. It displays in the footer of each topic as I've included the variable on the master page. This may not be quite what you're looking for, however, if your file names are unique that solution should work. Even if Flare were to provide a system generated topic ID as you might like, should a user communicate that ID to you, you would still need a way to map that back to the file anyway. :)
