Need input for Image Mapping

So, in most of my topics, i have an image that is mapped... but it's not obvious that the reader can roll over areas to access links .. We have a little heading at the top of the image, but people are saying it needs to be more obvious...

here's one of the comments: " Need visual indicator on the image to tell what is clickable or not "

Does ANYONE have an idea of how we can make this "rollover" functionality more obvious?

Hi,

I suggest to use Screen tips whereever possible. Additional suggestion: mark every region in the picture by a coloured frame.

Yes... each has a screen tip as you roll over it...

You poor thing! I had a bunch of helps that had image maps on hundreds of topics. I ended up dumping them completely as users didn't know they were there and they were a total mare to update every release. Best of luck.

YEAH.. i've considered the dumping idea... but everyone seems to like them.. and only a few people have complained about them not being obvious.. even tho there's a note about each that reads: Click on a screen element... blah blah blah...

I'm sort of wondering about maybe WATERMARKING the images with a little "click anywhere on this screen to learn more" kinda thing.. I'm a bit concern about adding color to each area as that would get rather busy on some of my screens...

In the past I've just used a red box around every clickable area. I hate them, and they are a pain to maintain, but I thought it was better than not marking each area. You could play around with colour and linestyle in your image editor to figure out what works best in your circumstance.
