Style to resize image by percent

Post by cayennep »

Instead of resizing in image editor, I'd like to have a 75% style and a 60% style as those should be fine for most screenshots - wide ones at 75%, square ones where you can still see the text at 60%.

In the Unclassified group, I set the max-height and max-width for the two styles to 75 and 60%.

However, the wide one at 75% is working on a wide image, but the square (less wide) one is not. Nothing changes when I apply either the 75 or 60 styles. Tried setting the thumbnail max-height to the number of pixels the image is when resized to what I want, but no luck.

I could have sworn I've done this before in Flare but not working now. always confusing re thumb max-height but it looks like it's 'if the image is more than this height, display as thumbnail' but that's not happening either.

Any tips appreciated, doesn't look like this is possible so will likely have to resize in snagit. I seem to remember inconsistencies and issues with simply dragging the corner to resize, which would be another easier option but would not resize as consistently as a 'show all these shapes at 75%, and all these other ones at 60%'

Be aware that if you use a relative value like % for "width" or "max-width", it is relative to the container that it sits in (not relative to the original size of the image) so if your image is, say, 500 pixels and the width of the container (the <body> element, or a <div>, or a table cell for example) is 1000 pixels, a width of 50% makes the image 500 pixels wide, not 250 pixels wide.

Also, to avoid distortion you should avoid setting both max-width and max-height.

So you might want to set width or max width at a specific number of pixels, or cm, or whatever. (Depends what your output is - that'd work for PDF but might introduce difficulties for online outputs - I'm no expert).

Here's a link that discusses width a bit more, you might find it useful. https://www.w3schools.com/css/css_dimension.asp
