Querying Salesforce Knowledge inside HTML5 Output

Hi all,
My organization has an HTML5 side-nav Online Help system, built by Flare, and we also have a knowledge base built by Salesforce Knowledge.
Our knowledge articles are public (not behind a login) and indexed by Google.
I would like to query the knowledge base from within my HTML5 Online Help system. For example, on a topic related to performance reviews, I'd like to display the top 5 knowledge articles related to performance reviews.
Has anyone done anything like this or know how I may go about doing so?
