Flare and Apple's new processors

Post by markallison »

A lot of Mac-based Flare users have been wishing for a native Mac version for years. With Apple's announcement to fully transition to their ARM-based architecture within the next two years (probably sooner), it's very likely that Windows won't run on Apple devices any more (not in Boot Camp and probably not in Parallels or VMWare). Given that scenario, I'm REALLY hoping that MadCap is already working to bring a good solution to the Mac.

I would value Mac-based Flare too, as my entire workflow is Mac-based. I run Parallels and Windows purely to run Flare.

However, I'd be very surprised were MadCap to undertake such a port. Ports of this kind can be company killers.

My current production Mac is 2.5 years old. I'll get at least another two to three years production use out of it (and maybe up to five years, because it's a superfast, high-RAM, solid-state-only machine). So, by the time I'll need to replace it, the state of play will be obvious.

My expectation at this point in time is I'll probably need to replace it with a Windows machine in order to run Flare. Historically speaking, it's the apps that have always driven OS-choice. For such a critical app as Flare, I would (alas) resign myself to having to run a Windows box in order to run Flare.
