TOC - can omitted topics still be visible to user? [FIXED]

Post by M33R4 »

I have 40 plus topics in the 3rd level of my navigation results when the user drills down which is making the page too congested. I was thinking of removing the 3rd level from my TOC but need another way for the user to see a list of those topics which I have removed from the TOC.

How can I achieve this/is that even possible, please :?:

Thanks.

Depends on your output. If you're producing a PDF, then the topic has to be in the TOC to be seen. If your printed TOC is too full you can set the mc-heading level to 0 for those headings you don't want to appear.

Not the same restriction for online outputs, because the default is, if it's in your project, it's in your output, so the user can find the topic with a search, or you can have context-sensitive help topics that don't appear in the TOC.

Do need a bit more context though before we can give you much more than general guidelines.

If this is related to this post here...
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=33091&p=142219#p142219

Then a menu proxy can be used to display your whole TOC or parts of it (using context sensitive option).

In my top navigation bar, I've taken your tip Dave in reducing the depth of TOCs to 2 via the SKIN > Setup > Top Menu Levels to show (Depth):.- so although the sub-topics are not omitted from my TOC, they are not visible when the user hovers over Level 2 the top nav. You gave me this tip in another post -viewtopic.php?f=6&t=33091

The user won't be able to see those sub-topics when they click on the Level 2 header in the top nav header but they will see a clickable topic header instead. When they click on this header, it takes them to the landing page where they will see all the sub-topics links. I have therefore used your tip Dave of the menu proxy so thank you again :)

My Menu Proxy is placed in my topics Master page so it's populated across the board/all topics pages. I've placed it inside a DIV/container tucked away to the right of my screen so it doesn't encroach on the body.
