Variable set in the pagelayout header

Hi everyone!
I feel really stupid because I feel I should really be able to figure this out. I am generating different pdf outputs, each of which has a document ID. I want this document ID to appear on the header of every page. So I want to create a variable set that contains a list of all the Document IDs for different documents. Then I want to put on the pagelayout header, the variable set 'Document ID' and then be able to define in the target which variable the target should pick from the variable set.
Is this the wrong approach? I don't want to use conditions because that would mean having to make a condition for every document.
Any help would be appreciated!
