Page Layout Question

Post by EricS »

Hello all -

Ok - I had this issue several year ago however I cannot remember how I solved it and I don't have the time right now to spend trying to figure it out. :D Hoping that the collective propeller hive mind can help.

I created a page layout that contains a title page (T) and a normal page (N).

When I open a new topic and apply the page layout's T page to it, is is automatically adding a second page to the topic that cannot be deleted.

I know it is probably something quite simple that I am missing. Help is much appreciated.

In the TOC entry for the topic, do you have Auto-end on a 'left' page selected (Printed Output tab)? Or is the topic contained within a section that is auto-end of a left page? Flare will auto insert addtional pages when these options are selected. Troubleshooting additional pages can be tricky I've found and sometimes the issue may be in a TOC entry nowhere near the topic with the extra pages.

If that's not an issue, sometimes additional pages can be inserted because of styles forcing extra space that can't be contained on a single page.

Thanks, Rob. I guess I should have been more detailed in my post.

Yup - I've tried all the troubleshooting with the TOC entry/auto-end settings/etc. I've reached out to Madcap support at this point to see what they have to say.

Just to clarify - the "extra" page is occurring when I open a new topic and then apply the Title .flpgl to it. Instead applying the layout to the single page topic it creates a new page in the topic.

Like this:

1. Create new topic.
2. Click Page Layout Button.
3. Apply my .flpgl layout and select Title.

Appears to add a page to the topic at this point. See attached screenshots.

Hi Eric,

Sorry I misunderstood. Page layouts are applied in the fltoc file.
Select the entry and then choose Properties > Printed output > add a page break and select the layout and type of page.

All the Page Layout selection in the XML viewer does is enable you to preview as you type the output page. I can view a topic in one of my many page layouts for example but it doesn't change the topic at all or change my output.
What does the output look like when you build and view it?

As for the extra page you're seeing. It looks like your Title page on that layout doesn't have a Body frame. So when viewed in that template content is being forced to flow into the second page which does have a Body frame. That's why you're seeing two pages in your XML viewer. As I said, this won't necessarily affect the output unless you've applied the Title page to the topic in your fltoc file. Either add a Body frame on that Title page layout or apply a different template to the topic.

Cheers,

Rob

Rob -

GRRR!!!! My update post that I wrote earlier didn't post!

I figured that out. That's what happens when trying to fix inherited problems. Once I added the body frame everything fell into place.

Thanks to the input!
