Slow page loading in Central

When we view our help site in Central, there is a noticeable lag when the page loads. The footer initially appears halfway up the page then drops to the bottom where it belongs, and the top nav doesn’t appear until after the footer drops to the bottom. This happens on every page, and continues to happen on pages you’ve already visited.
My guess is that it’s something to do with the CSS, but I’m not sure what. We are using about 4 CSS files. I’ve tried to trim them down, but I guess I can make them smaller.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
