Setting Up Continuous Numbering for Topics and TOC

Hi everyone!

I'm fairly new to Flare and hope this post is in the correct place. I’m trying to set up a project in Flare and need to configure continuous numbering for topics, something like this:

1 Topic 1
1.1 Sub-topic 1
1.1.1 ...
1.1.1.1 ...
1.1.1.1.1 ...

2 Topic 2
2.1 ...
2.1.1 ...

I need the numbering to go up to H5. How can I achieve continuous numbering across topics?

I tried setting the following autonumbering commands (along with 10 other variations that didn’t work 😅) in the stylesheet:
H1: 'GH:{n+}{ =0} { =0} '
H2: 'GH:{n}.{n+}{ =0} '
H3: 'GH:{n}.{n}.{n+} '
H4: 'GH:{n}.{n}.{n}.{n+} '
H5: 'GH:{n}.{n}.{n}.{n}.{n+} '

I also tried what Daniel Ferguson recommended (see below) on slide 8 here: https://assets.madcapsoftware.com/webin ... pFlare.pdf. The example of the TOC on page 8 that he provided is exactly what I need.

H1: 'CH:{chapnum}. '
H2: 'CH:{chapnum}.{n+} '
H3: 'CH:{chapnum}.{n}.{n+} '
H4: 'CH:{chapnum}.{n}.{n}.{n+} '
H5: 'CH:{chapnum}{n}.{n}.{n}.{n+} '

What am I doing wrong?

I also tried changing the TOC’s section break properties to "Start a new section," but nothing changed.

Also, how do I make the numbering appear in the Table of Contents as well?

I really appreciate your help and guidance to get me on the right track! Cheers!

Hi,

You're close...
The second example should work correctly with the chapnum variable in the styles. As well as starting a new section (which really only changes what page layout is applied at each section), did you change the Auto-Number section to have the first chapter opening topic as "Reset to 1", all over topics subsequent to that as "Same as previous" apart from those that start a new chapter - those need to be set to "Increment number" for Chapter Number. Numbering itself comes from a TOC property for each topic. The formatting of the numbering comes from the style for the headings.

... just to add...
that correct auto-numbering won't be visible in the XML Editor or the topic preview pane. It will only be correct in the output as numbering is constructed from the TOC structure.
