Synchronize navigation elements with TOC entries not working as I expect

Post by JeanLR1970 »

I have selected Synchronize navigation elements with TOC entries for my HTML output, because I need to have links to the same topic from several places in the TOC.
However, I have found that the links still go to the first listed location rather than following the TOC entries.
Have I missed something else that I need to do to make this work? Or have I misunderstood how it should work?

At the moment, I am working round this by duplicating the topics in each folder that I want to use them, but this is cumbersome and rather defeats the object of using single sourcing.

I am using MadCap Flare 2024 r2, but experienced the same problem in earlier versions.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Are you saying the breadcrumbs and mini-toc are not synchronising? Or do you mean that you are Topic B and want to link to the third occurrence of Topic A?

If it's the second option, I don't believe that's how the feature works. I think it's only for the breadcrumbs and mini-toc: https://help.madcapsoftware.com/flare20 ... ntries.htm

I suppose it might work if you use the longer URL available when you click on the appropriate entry in the generated TOC, but I'm not sure how those additional links are generated and when/if they change - you might end up with a broken link for example.

The topic I linked does provide an alternative using a snippet which might work for you, though.

It's happening in the mini toc.
I have two sets of documents - one for the current version of the software and one for the previous version of the software. Sometimes, when I click on the link in the toc for the current version, it opens the link for the topic in the previous version and that the path in the breadcrumb is the path for the previous version.

I suspect it's actually working as expected, so I'd like to suggest a different way to do things, because you're already more than half way there.

1. Open one of the topics (doesn't matter which, as they've got identical content).
2. Create a snippet that contains everything except the first heading. (This is in case your TOC is set up to use first heading in topic.)
3. Paste that snippet into all of the identical topics.
4. Put each topic wherever it needs to be.

This way, the body of the topic is only in one place - the snippet - so you only need to edit it in that one place, and the TOC doesn't contain the same topic in several places. (If you think about it, it makes sense to have unique topics in the TOC, because if you have the same topic in 5 different places how is the help going to know which of the 5 places is the one you need?)

Hope that helps. :)
